This Is Why We "Step"

October 11, 2018

Black Greek Lettered Organizations also known as the Divine 9 emerged within the 20th Century to help black college students survive challenging environments in America during this time.

The origins of each organizations calls, chants, and steps follows back to the continent of Africa. Calls and chants were used within tribes to communicate members locations and distance, and stepping holds roots in South and West African tribal traditions. Most of stepping origins can be dated back to the African Gum Boot Dancers whom worked within the mines, and "stepped" to get through their work days.

Step Shows were first originally known as " Greek Sings" where organizations of the Divine 9 (National Pan-Hellenic Council) would come together to use song and dance to uplift audiences, and show unity amongst their organization, soon the greek signs evolved into what we call step shows.

Stepping grew to be popular when movies and shows as Spike Lee's School Daze , A Different World, and The Opening Ceremony of the 1996 Summer Olympics all featured various National Pan-Hellenic Council organizations performing their respective steps.

* Please note the calls, chants, and hand symbols hold much tradition and weight to Black Greek Letter Organizations, and should not be performed by anyone who has not committed themselves to serve within these organizations.

Steps however can be performed across cultural boundaries with respect to the culture it originated within.

History must be respected and preserved, and this is just one way society has shaped it to live on.
