Fall 2016 - Engineers Without Borders-Guatemala Stove Project

On the national level Engineers Without Borders USA builds a better world through engineering projects that empower communities to meet their basic human needs and equip leaders to solve the world’s most pressing challenges.

The mothers in the La 46 community of Guatemala struggle every day with preparing meals for the school children. These mothers spend hours inhaling smoke while they prepare the food every day due to poor ventilation, as well as spending even more time collecting the wood just to run the stoves. Furthermore, to keep the  fire off of the ground, the current stoves are set on a concrete shelf that is so high that it hurts the mothers' backs just to move the giant pots up and down from the burners. The women leaders of La 46 reached out to EWB-OSU seeking a partnership to find an appropriate solution to their various problems. Together with the community, our students have designed  a rocket stove that will fit all of their needs and more. With your support, we will be able to make the design a reality, implementing the new stoves in the spring of 2017.

Recently, the members of the Plan de Avila community of Guatemala heard about our partnership with the nearby community of La 46. The members of Plan de Avila spend many hours of their day hiking up and down the mountain to collect enough water to sustain their families and yet, the water that they collect is not safe to drink. Last May, Plan de Avila reached out to EWB-OSU asking for our help in designing a filtration system as well as looking for a solution to the water quantity problems. Our students will design possible solutions to fit the communities needs and will assess the potential of these designs during our next trip to Guatemala along with our Stove Implementation Team.

These projects are very important to improving the quality of living conditions in these communities and sustainably fulfill their basic human needs. Donations will be directly applied to travel costs and project materials, allowing you to not only improve the life of those living in these communities, but also broaden the horizons of our student members through their exposure to practical project development and cultural experience abroad.
