A novice rower is an athlete in their first year of collegiate competition. During this time, they learn proper form and build up strength to compete against other novices.

A rower with more than 1 year of experience is called a varsity rower. during this time, rowers perfect their technique and learn how to become leaders within the team.

a Competitor who has attained, or will attain, the age of 21 during the current calendar year is called a masters rower. these rowers continue to compete after their college careers.

Olympic Lightweight rowers are rowers who have weight limited boats requirements to ensure fairness and have made it to the Olympic level to compete against lightweight rowers from other countries.
