On the topic of:
Mending and Momentum
After a successful online conference in February 2022, we're highly looking forward to our first in-person departmental conference, presented by the graduate students of Oklahoma State University's English Department. The conference will be held on Friday, April 28 and Saturday, April 29, 2023 in the Wes Watkins Center and welcomes both academic and creative work from institutions across the region.
This year's theme will be 'Mending and Momentum' and we invite panelists and presenters (i.e. papers, creative works, etc.) from both OSU and surrounding regional universities from disciplines not limited to: Creative Writing, English, Linguistics, Literature, Rhetoric and Writing Studies, Screen Studies, TESOL/Applied Linguistics, and other interdisciplinary programs.
About the Theme:
Mending can mean to repair, to bring together, but also to supplement something tattered with something new. A process of change, but also one which necessitates evaluation--setting the broken against the whole. Upholding an ideal, but also reaching past the ideal, supplementing with things we have reclaimed, rescued from wreckage. Or, in some instances, breaking that ideal down until it is unrecognizable, in order to build something new.
'Mending and Momentum' is concerned not only with repair, but also the limits of repair--with refusing repair, or refusing to be repaired. The art of mending, but also the art of failure, of breaking and being broken, and of refusing to be set against a whole. Presentations could focus on disasters and injustices, but also the ways we are carried forward. The ways that we grow and rebuild, the ways that we move on.
About the Conference:
We will be kicking off the conference on Friday afternoon with an official welcome, opening remarks, a special plenary speaker, and refreshments. Saturday will include academic panels and presentations throughout the day with refreshments and lunch provided. We will end Saturday off with awards to graduate students and recognition of all donors. Specific times for each day will be announced at a later date.
With Your Donation:
Any amount will go towards our conference's budget and will be used towards space rental, catering services, marketing, plenary and other speaker costs, and registration materials. This year's conference will be our biggest one yet, and we plan on expanding it to the entire region and beyond, welcoming all colleges and universities in the Southern Plains and surrounding area. Photos on our page illustrate the success of our TESOL/Applied Linguistics program's previous Spring Forum, which they successfully offered for the past seven years. We are excited to combine efforts and form a broad community of scholars for decades to come!

$1000 will cover a great percentage of our budget and go towards speaker fees, catering costs, and space rental fees in our beautiful Wes Watkins Center.
