At Oklahoma State University - Oklahoma City, students in health careers learn to be safe, entry-level practitioners within their own discipline and scope of practice. Paramedicine students learn the aspects of life-sustaining care before the patient reaches the hospital doors, nursing students learn to recognize and anticipate what patients need and why, and diagnostic imaging students learn to look inside the body to survey the internal landscape of health. Each discipline teaches with advanced technology in simulation and practice labs and requires students to perform clinical rotations in real-life healthcare venues. While all components of an ever-evolving healthcare system, students are isolated within each program – until the Inter professional Simulation. Inter professional Simulation brings pre-med students who travel from the Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences in Tulsa to OSU-OKC to work alongside OSU-OKC paramedicine, nursing, and diagnostic imaging students; each playing their part in a simulation of an emergency room in a bustling hospital. The session begins with five simulation rooms full of patients (high-fidelity mannequins exhibiting the diverse ailments that bring actual patients to emergency care). There are patients who are having complications from a medical issue, pediatric patients who have been involved in an accident, and as the event progresses, patients arrive with various mental health and substance abuse concerns. To further the realism, impatient family members are sprinkled throughout to mimic events that could happen on any given day in an emergency room. Support of this project would allow OSU-OKC to expand participation of this great experience to other programs that include Fire Protection, Police, & Sign-Language Interpretation. This support would also allow OSU-OKC to document this unique experience in the recruitment of future students and marketing of OSU-OKC and these programs for years to come!
