Many thanks to all our PhilanthroPete donors for their support of the GEO-REx high school summer camp! Particular thanks go to Lawrence and Patty Walker and Mike and Sue Gaskins for generously organizing and funding the matching challenge. The challenge continues until Nov. 29 or $3000, so if you haven't donated, you still have 4 days to do so.
Your donations are critical to the success of our program and ensure we can continue to introduce high school students to the wonderful field of Geology. Feel free to pass along information about GEO-REx to any high school students interested in learning more about the geosciences.
On the final day of the GEO-REx summer camp, the campers get the opportunity to chat with geoscience professionals and ask questions about their jobs and career pathways. Most of the professionals are graduates of the BPSoG who volunteer their time to mentor the high school students, and we are grateful for their assistance. After the career panel, the students present their research project summaries to an audience of family and friends.
We hope that this quick glimpse into the GEO-REx summer camp has illustrated the type of hands-on, geoscience-focused activities that your PhilanthroPete donation funds. We appreciate all donations, no matter how small--every little bit helps us reach more high school students and grow the number of geologists!
On Day 3, GEO-REx participants work on hands-on research projects under the mentorship of BPSoG faculty and students. Campers work with their mentors to address a geoscience research question, including gathering field samples, collecting data, and using cutting-edge instrumentation and software. Past research projects have ranged from lead measurements in soil to picking foraminifera from deep-sea sediments to identifying volcanic features from LIDAR images. GEO-REx students then assemble a presentation summarizing their project objectives, data, and results.
While we do seek and receive donations from geology societies and foundations, these awards do not cover all of the costs to run GEO-REx. Donations to PhilanthroPete are critical to ensuring the GEO-REx program runs this summer, so we appreciate your generosity!
Day 2 activities at the GEO-REx high school summer camp are all about exploring different branches of Geoscience. Students head out into the field to visit various geological sites around Stillwater, including the Lightning Lake research facility. Back on campus, they rotate through three hands-on workshops that explore concepts central to each of the three BPSoG majors: Geology, Geophysics, and Environmental Geoscience. The day ends with students selecting their research projects for the following day.
If you're curious about what students experience as part of the GEO-REx camp, wonder no longer. Over the next few weeks we're going to walk you through the participants' daily schedule for our 4-day, 3-night GEO-REx experience.
On Day 1, students arrive at OSU, get checked into their dorm rooms, then arrive at the Sue and Mike Gaskins Synergy Room in the Noble Research Center. They pick up a backpack of swag, including hand lens, field notebook, and water bottle, then are welcomed by the School Head and the GEO-REx team. After some hands-on instruction on doing research and the scientific method, the group heads off to the Hideaway for an all-you-can-eat pizza buffet.
Our PhilanthroPete fundraiser for the GEO-REx summer geoscience camp for high school students is up and running! Help us introduce students to geoscience fields and careers, including geology, geophysics, and environmental geoscience. Your generosity is greatly appreciated; our goal is to keep costs to the campers as low as possible while providing opportunities for them to participate in field trips, hands-on workshops, and research projects.
