The English Language and Intercultural Center

Who are we?

The English Language and Intercultural Center (ELIC) is located in the Wes Watkins Center on the campus of Oklahoma State University. Led by Dr. Emily Boersma and a team of experienced and qualified teachers, our mission is to provide state-of-the-art learning opportunities for international students and Stillwater community members who wish to improve their English language, academic and workplace skills. We accomplish this by creating customized programs to meet the various needs of our students, regardless of their academic backgrounds or future goals, and by adopting a student-centered approach to teaching. Since reopening in 2021, the ELIC has provided academic English courses for international students while simultaneously providing English classes and case management services for Afghan refugees. Whether students are seeking to learn English and intercultural skills for work and daily life or to focus on academic English to prepare for university courses, the ELIC team delivers the curriculum, instruction and guidance to meet learners' needs.

What are we raising funds for?

We wish to continue to expand our reach by offering English language classes to members of the Stillwater community. Many members of our Stillwater community find it difficult to integrate fully into the community due to language barriers. Time and financial constraints often prohibit community members from enrolling in English courses, including those offered in the ELIC’s regular program. The ELIC has had great success in beginning to address these challenges by providing very low-cost ($5 at the door) classes for community members and at times that allow students to attend classes outside of the hours of their full-time jobs. The funds raised will be used to offset the cost of tuition, textbooks, technology, and other fees associated with continuing low-cost Community English classes.

Thank you for supporting ELIC Community English. We all appreciate it!
