Cullen Pickens Memorial Field Camp Scholarship

In support of the Boone Pickens School of Geology reaching our fundraising goal, and ultimate goal of turning the Cullen Pickens Memorial Field Camp Scholarship into an endowed fund, Dr. Halihan will donate $1,000 if $9,000 are raised, or $2,000 if $18,000 are raised.

OUR GOAL: Raise enough funds for the Cullen Pickens Memorial Field Camp Scholarship to support students attending the Les Huston Geology Field Camp AND turn the scholarship into an endowed fund. 

WHY: Scholarships are a critical component of student success for the Les Huston Geology Field Camp course, providing students the financial ability to spend approximately 5 weeks during the summer in Colorado to gain hands-on geologic mapping techniques and complete their degrees. One such scholarship is the Cullen Pickens Memorial Field Camp Scholarship which was established in 2024 based on the final wishes of Mr. Pickens to have students attend the camp.

Mr. Pickens was a proud graduate of Charles Page High School and Boone Pickens School of Geology. He attended and was passionate about the Les Huston Geology Field Camp, setting an exemplary standard for future student attendees. Cullen Pickens’ love of field camp and the geologic wonders of Colorado has spread to BPSoG students, even today, highlighting the importance of this geoscience capstone field-based class. The Cullen Pickens Memorial Field Camp Scholarship serves as financial support to BPSoG students attending Les Huston Geology Field Camp.

 THE FIELD CAMP EXPERIENCE: 

The Les Huston Geology Field Camp is in line with the land grant mission, pillars, and core values of OSU, where students have the option to tailor their field camp experience to areas of energy and environment. During their time at the Les Huston Geology Field Camp, students combine their classroom experiences to develop a foundation of traditional and modern geoscience field methods. 

SUPPORT OUR GOAL: We are honoring the life and legacy of Cullen Pickens through the Cullen Pickens Memorial Field Camp Scholarship. Mr. Pickens inspired and continues to inspire so many of our past and present students, contributing to student success at the Les Huston Geology Field Camp. In order to continue to support students at Les Huston Geology Field Camp, we want to assist student attendees who may suffer financial hardship during the 5-week long course, given students often have to quit or take leave from their jobs, provide childcare, or arrange for help with their monthly expenses while at camp. All funds raised will go to continuing the Cullen Pickens Memorial Field Camp Scholarship, with our ultimate goal of turning it into an endowed fund. Students attending the Les Huston Geology Field Camp will receive financial support through the scholarship, therefore honoring Mr. Pickens' final wishes of students attending the camp.
