Cowboy Motorsports - Pulling for the Legacy, Building for the Future

Cowboy Motorsports (CMS) strives to provide Oklahoma State University students, studying various majors, with an opportunity to build life skills and gain real-world experience through the yearly fabrication of a 1/4 scale tractor. CMS focuses on teaching our members basic mechanicing, wiring, CAD modeling, decision justification, and problem solving skills.

Each year our team designs, manufactures, and competes with a 1/4 scale tractor at the American Society for Biological and Agricultural Engineers International Quarter Scale Tractor Competition. The design process begins quickly each year after the previous competition ends and takes approximately 400 hours to complete. Building and testing the tractor takes the team another 300 hours before the final product is finished.

Your generous support will aid the club in the process of purchasing the vinyl wrapping of our competition trailer, which we use for events around Stillwater and for traveling to the competition in Peoria, Illinois, as well as assisting in the purchase of equipment, tools and shop supplies. The club values teaching our members about the use of new technologies so that they can develop their skills, and your support ensures that CMS can continue to offer members valuable learning opportunities by keeping the shop well stocked with quality instruments.

Cowboy Motorsports extends our deepest appreciation for your time and support!

CMS Started Their Engines

Cowboy Motorsports at Oklahoma State University was founded in 1997.

$34

Tractor Horsepower

The CMS team is provided an engine for the competition. It is 34 horsepower and is the only engine that can be used on the team tractor!

$45

Electric Motor Encoder

An encoder is a device that converts data from one format to another. The team uses an encoder to convert an analog signal to a digital signal for the electric motor controller used in the tractor. The typical cost for an electric motor encoder is $45, and your assistance in the purchase of one is incredibly appreciated!

$80

Durability Course

A part of the 1/4 scale tractor design competition is the durability course test. The durability course tests the robustness of the tractors to see how well they will handle rough conditions. The length of this course is 80 feet!

$93

93 Lawnmowers Serviced

Cowboy Motorsports hosts an annual lawn mower servicing clinic to benefit members of the Stillwater community. Last year, we serviced 93 lawn mowers during this event!

$300

Pulling Track Length

The pulling portion of the 1/4 scale tractor competition tests the pulling capabilities of the tractor. During this portion of the competition, the team's tractor will pull a weighted sled on a 300 foot track.

$900

Maximum Tractor Weight

The maximum weight allowed for a tractor that is competing in the competition is 900 pounds.

$1,550

Low Idle

The low idle of the team’s Kawasaki tractor engine is set at 1550 RPM.

$2,004

Champions!

Cowboy Motorsports won the quarter-scale tractor competition for the first time in 2004. This was the first of two back-to-back wins, as the team also won first place in 2005.
