Sustain the School of Music String Area

Who Are We?

The GSM String Area consists of approximately 50 students and 4 faculty spread across violin, viola, cello, bass, and offers degrees in Performance, Music Education, Bachelor of Arts, and Music Industry. The GSM also welcomes music minors and non-majors to participate in ensembles as well. The purpose of the GSM String Area is to educate string and non-string players who will go on to be performers, educators, work in industry, or use skills acquired in music in other disciplines/interdisciplinary skills in other fields.

What Will Your Donation Do?

The GSM String Area wants to raise funds to support our students in gaining educational experiences by ensuring access to materials to complete their string area coursework and that instruments are in good working order.

OSU lends instruments out to students both for playing in ensembles, such as the Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Ensembles, as well as for High and Low String Tech classes, which music education majors need in order to be best prepared to teach.

Donations will help us cover additional costs incurred by students. While we have instruments and other materials for students to use, maintaining them is a continual process.

Some of the maintenance involves rehairing bows, changing strings, and repairing seams that pop due to changes in weather. We'd also like purchase additional, but necessary, accessories such as rock stops for cellos and basses, shoulder rests for violins and violas, rosin, and mutes for technique classes.

In addition to regular maintenance, we also hope to alleviate the cost of paying for a collaborative pianist to accompany students on their required semesterly juries, for masterclasses, and for recitals.

Your Impact

Having our instruments in the best condition allows students to have a higher quality learning experience. Your support will also improve the level of our ensembles and the caliber of our music-making.

Through your donation, you are supporting future music educators, performers, and people who will be passionate about music for the rest of their lives!
