Thank you to those who have supported The Hsu Family Endowed Creative Graphic-Thinking Award. We are currently at 41%! Please help us in reaching our goal by sharing with friends and classmates. Here's what a few alumni said about Professor Paul Hsu.

"As a current designer, I want to credit Professor Hsu for my early development and appreciation of graphics design! He taught me how to become a better visual interpreter of ideas and placing those ideas through graphics."

          - Moises Colmenares, Class of 2008

“I went to Professor Hsu to inquire about the Landscape Architecture program when I was a sophomore at OSU. I was nervous as we discussed the major requirements and if I had the drawing skills to be in the program. By the end of the discussion, I was setting up my appointment to enroll in the program! That following semester I was enrolled in his Graphics studio, and he taught me the drawings skills I use to this day (hit-go-hit). I am grateful Professor Hsu set me on the path to becoming a Landscape Architect!”

          – Monica Concienne, Class of 2014

“Our study abroad trip to Japan and Thailand is still the most memorable experience of my college years. Only looking back now as an adult do I understand how joyful and easy going Professor Hsu was to take a group of immature and wild college kids on such an ambitious trip. That trip opened my eyes to the importance of travel and experiencing other cultures. We visited countless gardens, rode high speed trains, stayed in a monastery and with host families, road elephants, visited Thai resorts and markets, toured an orchid farm and an umbrella factory and Professor Hsu smiled through it all.”

          - Hannah Dean, Class of 2008

“His smile is contagious, and he taught with such excitement, adding humor and life-lessons to his graphics class through ‘Confucius says’ story sketches.  I will never forget the study abroad trip with him to Japan/Thailand stopping to make time to reflect, sketch, eat shrimp chips, and pat some very important moss.”

           – JaNell Milburn/ De La Cruz, Class of 2008

Here's what Katie O'Meilia, Class of 2008 remembers about Professor Hsu.

Among his various teaching responsibilities, Professor Hsu taught the Landscape Architecture programs entry level Graphics I and II courses and therefore was often a student’s first introduction to the fundamental hand drawing and design skills that would begin their journey of becoming a Landscape Architect. Professor Hsu always brought a positive and engaging approach to the design studio. His fun, happy, and relaxed personality often made him a favorite among his students, especially young students who were unsure about the drawing skills they would need to develop to become a professional Landscape Architect.

In addition to teaching, Professor Hsu established the Japan and Thailand Summer Study Abroad Program. The huge undertaking of programming, planning, fund raising, executing, chaperoning, and serving as sole language interpreter for a large group of young college students on such a monumental trip is a testament to his dedication to growing his students as well-rounded people, not just future professionals. The summer program provided so many students with their first experience of traveling aboard and engaging with other Landscape Architecture students from across the globe. The trip while always fun, served as an educational, cultural, and memory making experience that so many students look back on with fond memories to this day.

My best memories of Professor Hsu always include laughter. I served as his Graphics I & II teaching assistant and I distinctly remember him telling me with a chuckle not to give out too many A’s or students would think they were good at drawing and that no student in Graphics I & II is good at drawing, YET! In addition, I participated in the Japan and Thailand Study Abroad trip in 2004, which opened my eyes not just of all the possibilities within the profession but to the world itself. It was my first time to travel out of the country and meet wonderful people (my host family especially) that were so culturally different than anyone and anything I had ever known growing up in rural Oklahoma. That trip changed me as a person, and I will always treasure it. Supporting this scholarship fund is a fitting way to recognize Professor Hsu for his 22 years of service to the OSU Landscape Architecture Program.

Through Professor Hsu’s dedication to teaching, he had positive impact both personally and professionally on each and every one of his students.

Study Abroad Experiences

February 23, 2023

Professor Paul Hsu was instrumental in piloting the Japan Study Abroad Program in 1999. Hsu and Dr. Charles Leider went with Hsu’s daughter Brook and one other student, James Heath for this exploratory trip. In 2001, Professor Hsu officially launched the Japan Urban Landscape and Historical Garden Design Study Abroad Program with 21 students participated. This Japan Program spanned from 2001 to 2011 and continued one more time in 2014 with Professor Nicholas Nelson. The program was expanded to include Thailand Environmental Study from 2005 to 2011. There were more than 150 students participated in this program throughout those years.

Study abroad experience enhances students learning with better understanding of different cultures, career opportunities and foreign language skills. These things expand student's view of the world and those around us.
