The OSU Student Farm, within the Horticulture Department of Ferguson College of Agriculture, operates in partnership with Our Daily Bread, Payne County's Food and Resource Center. The Student Farm is located at the old swine barn, which was built in 1930 by OSU students. This project involves student employees who get hands-on experience in cultivating a variety of fresh produce at the Student Farm. The farm supplies high-quality, locally grown fruits and vegetables to Our Daily Bread’s clientele. Our Daily Bread’s goal is to provide fresh produce to anyone who is experiencing food insecurity in Payne County. The Student Farm also supplies fresh produce to Pete’s Pantry, a program through OSU and the regional food bank that supplies food to students. By providing this produce to Our Daily Bread and Pete’s Pantry, we hope to support the community in the fight against food insecurity and provide valuable hands-on experience for students.
The funds raised will be allocated directly to the OSU Student Farm to enhance its operations and impact. Specifically, the funds will be used for the purchase of equipment that will help improve our ability to produce a higher yield of produce for Our Daily Bread. We also plan to expand the acreage on the student farm to increase the amount of land available for cultivation. These investments will help us with efficiency and maximize the yield of produce we can offer to Our Daily Bread clientele.
Currently, Our Daily Bread serves over 1200 households per month. Due to the large shortage of fresh produce Our Daily Bread, and many other food banks across the state, are experiencing, each household is limited to the amount of produce they can take. With the expansion of the Student Farm, we can increase the amount of fresh produce available to customers.
Oklahoma is ranked 45th in food insecurity, meaning a significant population in Oklahoma lacks the ability to access nutritious foods. This highlights how beneficial the expansion of the OSU Student Farm will be in the fight against food insecurity. The Farm’s ultimate goal is to help serve Oklahoma as a whole and decrease food insecurity statewide. As we grow, our team plans to help provide food to, not only Payne County, but other food banks across the state.
In 1930, OSU architects constructed a barn that would be known as the OSU Swine Unit. The lovely scents from the swine unit flooded the air and as Stillwater grew, this became a problem in near-by neighborhoods and it was not the most welcoming smell to enter Stillwater with. The swine unit was relocated to a new area and this barn was left empty for 20+ years. We have now moved into the property and would love to keep the barn as it is a staple to OSU and patch up the holes and cracks.
Oklahoma is ranked 45th in food insecurity. Food pantries are being relied on to the point they cannot keep fresh produce in stock for families in need. The mission for the student farm is to harvest and supply our local food bank with fresh produce so families have the availability of having this nutrient source in their day to day diet. Help us raise Oklahomas ranking!
A $100 donation will allow us to buy materials that will help keep the farm running on a day to day bases. For example, shovels easily become broken or worn down and need to be replaced often. With $100, we can buy a few shovels to keep the farm up and running at its upmost prolificacy.
The new Student Farm is in partnership with Our Daily Bread to help serve the local community. Our Daily Bread serves about 250 households a week by providing fresh produce and other food products to those in need.
On average each week, the farm harvests around 500 pounds to take to Our Daily Bread. Even with a 500 pounds a week, Our Daily Bread is still running out of food to provide to families in need. With your donation we can double this number and be able to provide more fresh produce to the food bank and help reach more families!
